a chapter of National Audubon, Smoky Hills Audubon Society shares their mission:
TO CONSERVE AND RESTORE NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS, FOCUSING ON BIRDS, OTHER WILDLIFE AND THEIR HABITATS FOR THE BENEFIT OF HUMANITY AND THE EARTH’S BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY
Smoky Hills Audubon Society ("SHAS") was formed in 1974 as one of National Audubon's Kansas chapters under the direction of Ron Klataske, Audubon Vice President for the region. Steve Burr was the first president of SHAS. Steve was also a leader in establishing the Kansas Audubon Council to which all eleven Kansas chapters send representatives. Current SHAS officers and committees are listed further below.
SHAS regular meetings start at 7:00 PM on the third Thursday of each month with a social hour and announcements. The evening's program is usually scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM. These meetings take place at the Carver Center, 315 N 2nd Street in Salina. All are welcome to attend.
SHAS Board meetings are held from August to May at Lakewood Discovery Center at 7:00 PM on the first Thursday of the month. All members are welcome to attend. All offers of help and/or suggestions are appreciated.
SHAS maintains the Smoky Hills Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary with its pond, woods, prairie and trails and it is a great place to bird.
