Local Viewing Areas

There are many wonderful nature areas around Salina that allow you the opportunity for some special birding.   However, if time is short and you are needing a break from things, check out these wonderful parks located in Salina for those quick viewings to unravel your nerves.  The following list of parks are all wonderful places to visit:

Lakewood Park has the Lakewood Discovery Center with many bird feeders on its grounds and places from which to view them.  There are trails around the pond, through the woods and through a prairie.

Indian Rock Park is also a mostly natural area.  There are trails through a prairie which borders the bank overlooking the Smoky Hill River.

Smoky Hill River, which is part of the Indian Rock Park.  There are rapids and little islands there.  Steps lead down to the river for the fishermen. Much of the park is a large rocky hill on which many and varied native wildflowers and grasses grow.  Trails go up and down the hill and around the pond.  On top of the hill is a viewing facility and a recreation building.

Thomas Park, in north Salina, has many evergreen trees and a variety of mature trees.

Sunset Park in west Salina has a brook, walks and many bushes and mature trees.

Oakdale Park in central Salina has wide expanses of grass and beautiful gardens.  The Smoky Hill River runs through it. There is a section devoted to a variety of trees.  Many mature native trees are found in the park and along the river.

In addition to these park areas, there is the Smoky Hills Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary
